Movers vs U-Haul: what each purchase actually is
Researched and written by Daniel Harper · Reviewed by Amanda Brooks · Last reviewed August 2026
This is the cheapest decision in a move and the one most often made on the sticker price alone. Hiring movers buys labour, carriage and a regulated liability position. Renting a truck buys a vehicle for a day or a week.
The federal record makes the difference legible, and it is the part a rental comparison never shows you.

Long distance moves, larger homes, and households that cannot supply the labour.

Local moves and small loads with genuine help at both ends.
A cross country move with nobody to lift at the far end.
What is the difference between hiring movers and renting a U-Haul?
Movers arrive with a crew, inventory the home, load, drive, and unload, under a written estimate. A rental gives you keys. Everything else, the lifting, the stairs, the driving, the fuel stops and the risk, transfers to you. The saving is real, and so is the work it represents, which is why the honest comparison counts both.
What does each one actually do, under federal registration?
| Brand | What the federal record holds |
|---|---|
| U-Haul | Equipment rental brand operating through per-state subsidiaries, each separately registered. The name search returns a separate registrant per state rather than one national household goods registration. Seven records were read in full; the Illinois and Mississippi records list general freight and rental trailers and moving equipment as cargo carried and do not list household goods. |
A mover you hire for an interstate move must hold household goods authority under its own USDOT number, and that record is public. The rental brand above has no brand level registration to check, because it rents through separate state companies and the equipment rental itself is not a household goods service. That is not a mark against it. It is a description of what you are buying.
Who does the loading, the driving and the carrying?
Movers: all three, with the crew responsible for the condition of the load. Rental: all three are yours, unless you hire loading labour separately, and even then the driving stays with you. On an interstate lane that is typically several days at the wheel of a vehicle you have never driven before, in traffic, often on a schedule.
What is each one liable for if something breaks?
A mover you hire for an interstate move is a household goods carrier. A household goods carrier owes the shipper 60 cents per pound per article under 49 CFR 375.701, which is the no extra charge level of liability, and it must offer full value protection as the alternative. A rental company is not a carrier, so it owes you nothing for damage to your own belongings; the damage waiver at the counter covers the truck, and any cargo product is a separate insurance purchase. The practical consequence is that damage on a rental move sits with the customer and whatever cover they bought, while damage on a carrier move is a claim against the carrier. See the federal moving rules page for the rule text and the claim window.
Which suits which move?
Rent when the move is local, the load is small, and the help is real rather than promised. Hire when the distance is long, when the household includes anyone who should not be lifting, or when the shipment has items that would be expensive to replace. A one bedroom across town and a four bedroom across the country are not the same decision, and the same answer rarely fits both.
What does each cost?
Hiring movers for a local two bedroom move is modelled at $630–$1,395, and a full service interstate two bedroom move at $3,000–$7,000. A studio interstate move is modelled at $1,650–$4,200. We do not publish prices for rental trucks, portable containers, or freight trailers. Those are vendor quotes that change by lane, date, and equipment availability, and we hold no stored dataset for them — a number here would be a guess with a dollar sign on it. Price the option you are considering directly, on your own dates, and compare it against the full-service figures above.
