Climate control means the unit sits inside a conditioned building held within a temperature band, and at most facilities it manages humidity only as a side effect of that. It matters for wood, leather, upholstery, electronics, documents, photographs and instruments, all of which are damaged by swings rather than by a single extreme. It matters far less for garden tools, metal shelving, plastic bins and vehicles, and it costs more every month of the stay.
What does climate controlled actually mean?
A temperature range, usually, and not always humidity. The term is not a defined standard, so two facilities can advertise it and control different things: one holds a temperature band through a conditioned interior corridor, another adds active dehumidification. Ask which, and ask for the range in degrees, because the answer decides whether the unit protects paper and instruments or only stops the extremes.
What actually needs a climate controlled unit?
Anything whose material moves with moisture or heat. Solid wood, which swells and splits across seasonal cycles. Leather and upholstery, which mould. Electronics, where condensation on a cold board is the failure. Photographs, documents and artwork, which cockle and stick. Musical instruments, especially anything with a glued soundboard. Wine and candles, which are heat problems rather than damp ones.
What is fine in an ordinary unit?
Garden and power tools, metal shelving, sealed plastic bins, car parts, sports equipment, outdoor furniture and most building materials. These are the contents self-storage was built for, and paying a conditioned rate on them for a year buys nothing. A common answer is a small conditioned unit for the sensitive items and a standard one for the rest.
Does the local climate change the answer?
Strongly. A Gulf Coast summer and a northern winter attack different materials, and a unit in a dry inland climate with a short stay may need nothing at all. The two variables that decide it are the humidity where the unit is and how many seasons the goods will sit through, which is why a stay running past a year usually justifies conditioning wherever the facility is.
