Student moving

Student moving services

A student move is small, time-boxed and governed by someone else's calendar. The load is rarely the problem; the access window usually is.

A student move is a small-load job with an inflexible date. Halls of residence and student apartment buildings publish move-in and move-out windows, allocate loading bays and lifts in slots, and often require a certificate of insurance from the carrier before a crew is allowed in the building. None of that is about the furniture; all of it decides whether the move happens on the day you booked.

The second difference is the summer. A student year produces two moves and a storage period between them, which means the service you want is often storage plus two short hauls rather than one move.

What makes a student move different

  • The volume is small, so hourly local crews, labour-only help and container services are all realistic options rather than full-service van lines.
  • The date is set by the institution, not by you, and peak weeks are shared with every other student in the building.
  • Building access is controlled: lift bookings, loading bays, time limits and a certificate of insurance naming the building are common requirements.
  • Two moves and a storage period between them is the normal pattern, not an exception.

Storage over the summer break

Two different products get called student storage. One is a self-storage unit you load and access yourself. The other is storage held by the carrier between pickup and delivery, which stays inside the moving contract and is priced by the carrier under its own tariff. This site holds no sourced price for either, so no figure is stated here. Ask which of the two you are being quoted, because access rights and who is liable for the goods differ between them.

Crossing a state line

A move between campuses in different states is an interstate household-goods move, whatever its size. The federal duties attach: An interstate household-goods carrier must give the shipper a written estimate of charges before the move. (49 CFR 375.401), and carrier liability defaults to 60 cents per pound per article (49 CFR 375.701) unless full value protection is bought. A move inside one state is governed by that state instead.

What a local move costs, by home size

Student moving is priced on the local model: crew hours at the carrier's filed hourly rate, plus a travel charge. The ranges below are the estimated totals this site holds for a local move under 50 miles.

Home sizeEstimated total
Studio$315–$775
1 Bedroom$420–$930
2 Bedroom$630–$1,395
3 Bedroom$840–$1,860
4 Bedroom$1,155–$2,480
5+ Bedroom$1,470–$3,100

Best fit
  • • Dorm rooms, shared houses and student apartments with a studio-sized load
  • • Moves tied to a published campus move-in or move-out window
  • • Students needing storage between the end of one year and the start of the next
Not ideal if
  • • The load is a furnished multi-bedroom household (book a full-service local or interstate carrier)
  • • The date is genuinely flexible and cost matters more than timing, in which case an off-peak booking is cheaper

What to ask before you book

  • What is the move-in window and does the building require a lift or bay booking?
  • Does the building require a certificate of insurance naming it, and can the carrier provide one?
  • Is the crew hourly, and what is the minimum charge?
  • If storage is included, is it self-storage or storage held by the carrier?
  • Is the move crossing a state line, and if so is the estimate written?
  • What liability level goes on the paperwork, and what does the alternative cost?

Frequently asked questions

How much does a student move cost?
It depends on whether it is an hourly local job, a labour-only crew, or an interstate shipment. Our pricing model estimates a studio local move as a total rather than an hourly rate, and the page above links the figure with its estimate label. We hold no sourced price for storage or for container vendors.
Do movers work around campus move-in days?
They work inside them, which is the constraint. Buildings allocate loading bays and lifts in slots on those days, so book the carrier and the building slot together rather than one after the other.
Is a dorm move covered by federal moving rules?
Only if it crosses a state line. The federal consumer-protection rules in Part 375, including the estimate, delivery and arbitration duties, apply to interstate household-goods shipments; a vehicle moved on its own is not a household-goods shipment. (49 CFR 375.101).
Should I use a labour-only crew?
It is a real option when you have a rental truck or a container and need loading help. You are then hiring labour rather than a carrier, so ask who is liable for damage, because the answer is usually not the crew.
