Long distance moving companies, ordered by filed interstate fleet
The largest interstate household goods fleets on BestMovers.info are United Van Lines with 4,731 power units, Atlas Van Lines with 2,731, and North American Van Lines with 1,333. Those counts are filed by each company on its MCS-150 in the FMCSA Company Census File, as of 2026-08-13. This page lists 29 companies in that order. Power units measure capacity, not service quality, and BestMovers.info publishes no rating or ranked order.

How this list is ordered
This list is ordered by the number of power units each company files with the federal government on its MCS-150 form, largest first. It is not a ranking by quality. A larger fleet means more capacity, not better service, and BestMovers.info publishes no rating, no score and no ranked order for any moving company. Registered cargo class is a tick box the registrant fills in and is not the agency granting household goods authority; the profile page for each company carries the authority record where one is held.
Which moving companies operate the largest interstate fleets?
United Van Lines files the largest interstate household goods fleet in this dataset at 4,731 power units, followed by Atlas Van Lines at 2,731 and North American Van Lines at 1,333. Each figure is the number the company itself filed on its MCS-150 form in the FMCSA Company Census File, dated 2026-08-13. BestMovers.info holds 29 companies meeting the filter and orders them by that single field.

What does fleet size actually tell you?
Fleet size tells you filed capacity and nothing about service. A company reporting 4,731 power units can staff more simultaneous long distance shipments than one reporting 1, which matters in June and July when crews are scarce. It says nothing about claims handling, crew training or on time delivery, and van line power units are often driven by agents rather than by the brand named on the truck.
What should you check before hiring an interstate mover?
Check the USDOT number in the FMCSA SAFER register before signing anything with any interstate mover. Confirm the entity status is active, that household goods appears among the registered cargo classes, and that the operating authority is granted rather than pending. Then require the written estimate that 49 CFR 375.401 obliges an interstate household goods carrier to give you, and read the valuation line before the crew arrives.
What is the difference between a carrier and a broker on this list?
A carrier owns trucks and moves the shipment itself; a broker arranges for a carrier to do it and touches nothing. Every company on this list files power units, so each operates equipment. A broker must instead hold a surety bond or trust fund of at least $75,000 under 49 CFR 387.307. Ask which one you are signing with, because the company holding your goods is the one liable for them.
How is a long distance move priced?
A long distance move is priced on shipment weight and mileage, with packing, valuation, storage and access charges added as separate lines. BestMovers.info estimates a two bedroom interstate move at $3,000 to $7,000, an editorial estimate based on May 2026 data rather than transaction prices. On a non binding estimate the carrier may collect no more than 110% of the estimated charges at delivery under 49 CFR 375.407.
Are cross country movers different from interstate movers?
Cross country movers and interstate movers are the same regulated population: any company carrying household goods across a state line needs FMCSA registration and operating authority, whether the distance is 40 miles or 2,800. Distance changes the price and the transit window, not the rules. The companies listed on this page by filed fleet size are the same ones that run coast to coast lanes, and the checks before booking one are identical.

Long-distance moving companies by city
Each city page holds the interstate subset of the registrants filed at that city's address, the published IRS out-of-state destinations with measured road distances, and the regulator that applies once the move leaves the state. Cities are listed alphabetically, which carries no ranking.
